Outdoor Performance Meals

Welcome to FOUNDATION Outdoors

If you have ever bitten into a freeze-dried backcountry meal and been deeply disappointed, you are not alone. For too long, outdoor meals have been synonymous with mushy textures, mystery meat, and a calorie count that leaves you bonking on the trail. FOUNDATION Outdoors set out to change all of that. Founded in Park City, Utah by passionate outdoor industry veterans who actually live the lifestyle, FOUNDATION makes 100% freeze-dried, fully cooked meals that taste like real food because they are made from real food. Think Lime Chicken with Avocado Mango Salsa, Spicy Italian Pork Sausage Risotto, and Chicken Pot Pie. These are not camp meals in name only.

What really sets FOUNDATION apart is the way they think about performance. Every meal is engineered to fuel athletes and outdoor professionals in extreme environments, averaging around 1,000 calories and 47 grams of protein per pouch, all packed into a lightweight 130-gram bag. They use only USDA-inspected real meat, restaurant-quality ingredients, and a proprietary cooking process that slow-cooks everything together before freeze-drying for flavor and nutrition that other brands simply cannot match. Whether you are weekend hiking with the family or pushing into a two-week backcountry expedition, FOUNDATION Outdoors has a meal ready to fuel every mile.

About Us

Born from a Passion for the Outdoors

FOUNDATION Outdoors was founded in Park City, Utah by outdoor industry leaders who live the outdoor lifestyle every day. They know firsthand what it takes to make a great meal for the backcountry, and they built their company around a simple but bold mission: to produce the highest quality, best tasting meals sold at a reasonable price. For too long, the outdoor meal category had been dominated by low-quality, obscenely expensive meals. FOUNDATION decided it was time to change that.

A USDA-Inspected, SQF-Certified Operation

FOUNDATION Outdoors owns and operates a commercial USDA-inspected manufacturing facility in Salt Lake City, Utah. Federal USDA inspectors are on-site every single day overseeing production. The facility has earned an SQF (Safe Quality Food) rating of Excellent every single year since 2017, the highest rating achievable from this globally recognized third-party food safety auditing body. They are also registered with the FDA for non-meat products. In an industry where some brands quietly produce meals in home kitchens without USDA inspection, FOUNDATION sets the gold standard for food safety.

A Decade of Experience, Zero Recalls

FOUNDATION Outdoors has been in business for more than ten years and has had zero voluntary or involuntary recalls in that entire time. They process all of their ingredients in-house, every ingredient undergoes at least one lethality step, and they conduct more environmental and product pathogen testing than any other USDA plant in the country. Their products are also fully Prop 65 compliant, with a dedicated legal team and extensive in-house testing program to back it up.

Their Own Team, Their Own Freeze Dryers

FOUNDATION builds and operates their own industrial-scale freeze dryers, custom-designed by their own team of freeze-drying experts and manufacturing partners right here in the United States. Their facility is located at high elevation in Salt Lake City, a naturally low-humidity environment that is ideal for freeze-drying, and their process is optimized to remove nearly every particle of moisture from their products. This is why their meals need no oxygen absorbers, which other brands rely on as a crutch. Their meals are lighter, better packaged, and shelf-stable for up to 15 years.

Community, Athletes, and Supporting Local

FOUNDATION Outdoors is a privately owned Utah-based company that is committed to giving back. Their facility is located in a HUB Zone, actively supporting an economically disadvantaged community. They sponsor local non-profits like the Utah Avalanche Center, the US Ski Team, and local athletes. FOUNDATION-sponsored athlete Troy Podmilsak is a US Ski Team member who won gold at the 2024 X Games and has punched his ticket to the 2026 Winter Olympics. They also support local and national animal shelters, and even produce a line of premium freeze-dried dog treats called Lucky and Friends for adventure pups.
