About Us

A Family Recipe, Half a World Away

It all started during a trip to Malaysia in 2006, when founder Michael Pan visited family he hadn't seen in years. Little did he know he would discover a recipe that had been in his family for decades. Many of his family members are vegetarian Buddhists, and they shared with him an array of vegetarian dishes, many of which featured mushrooms that were not only delicious but also satisfying and nourishing.

When Michael tried this particular snack made of shiitake mushrooms, he knew he had something to share with the world. Traveling to Malaysia was a wonderful opportunity to discover his family's history and traditions, which of course includes food. It opened his eyes to an incredible culture in Southeast Asia that has been using innovative ingredients and cooking techniques to create satisfying and delicious foods for generations.

From Malaysia to the Pacific Northwest

Back home, while working full time as an engineer, Michael's enthusiasm for developing the product never waned. For months he developed, tested, and iterated on his family recipe from his kitchen in the Pacific Northwest. In 2018, he officially launched Pan's Mushroom Jerky in four delicious flavors, all inspired by his family's original recipe.
